SPANISH LINER

SHELLED BY DESTROYERS

(Received October 11, noon.) ALGIERS, October 10. The Spanish liner Cabo Santo Tome (12,589 tons) is ashore and ablaze off the Algerian coast with one of the crew dead and eight injured after being shelled for an hour by two insurgent destroyers. Her SOS brought French seaplanes which scoured the area without finding trace of the attackers. An explosion and fire broke out when the liner was hit in the stern. The vessel was beached and the survivors taken off in a tug. The Cabo Santo Tome was on a voyage from Russia. It is not known if she carried passengers.
