After two months' warfare the British losses are most serious. Trade is only 20 per cent, of normal, though the damage to factories.is comparatively small. The greater part of the Hongkew and Yangtzepoo area is wrecked. Hundreds of British subjects who normally live and trade in that district have lost evev.-thing. Food prices are soaring and' the prospects are extremely gloomy in view of the coming of winter.
