DEATH & DESTRUCTION

TRAIL OF CYCLONE

SECTION OF SOUTH

AMERICA

NEW YORK, October 9,

Cyclonic storms left a trail of death and destruction in the south-eastern section of South America. Sixteen persons were killed and a hundred injured. Three hundred houses were razed, vineyards uprooted, and hundreds of cattle killed. ' '

The cyclone broke over the Brazilian city of Santa Maria at midnight and continued lor an hour, plunging the city into darkness. Terrified crowds sought refuge in churches.

Buenos Aires was without water for a day owing to a 50-mile an hour gale which swept away the water from the intake pipes at the waterworks on the River Plate.

The ports of Buenos Aires and Montevideo were closed to shipping because water was forced from the harbours. Many ships were stranded at their moorings.
