INTERCEPTED AT SEA

(Received October 9, 1.15 p.m.) ORAN, October 8.
The French merchantman Cassidaigne arrived from Sete after being inter* cepted by warplahes belonging to General Franco. The captain Said that when the ship was off the Balearic Islands a pursuit plane flew round her several times. Three hours later four bombers appeared and forced the vessel to enter Palma, where there were several Italian warships. Italians boarded the ship and searched for arms, but found only one revolver. The Nationalists wanted to unload the cargo of carbon-bisulphate, but the master would not allow this. His SOS was picked up by French warships, and a destroyer arrived. Her commander was satisfied that no one had been molested, and the Cassidaigne sailed for Oran.
