PLANTS FOR THE KING

One of the first tasks the King and Queen set themselves during their stay at Balmoral was the remodelling and improvement of the Alpine garden, states the "Daily Telegraph." ' This garden was first created about six years ago at the wish of Queen Mary, and is semi-circular in shape, made from grey stone, sloping down to a little lily pool in the centre. Carved ironwork gates at two sides bear the initials of King George V and Queen Mary. Plants have to be carefully chosen to suit the rather dry and sandy soil at Balmoral.
