MIGHT AGAIN BEST

TRENTHAM GALLOPS

MASTERTON HORSES TRIED

(By "Itangatira.")

Half an inch of rain thoroughly drenchcd the Trentham course in the early hours of this morning, and as a result the special two-year-old parades that were to have been held, were abandoned. However, horses engaged at Masterton next week were galloped, and though the rain continued lightly until near the close of the working hours the newly-opened portion of the trial grass provided good going, a little greasy but not soft. The feature of the morning was a mile by Cuddle (W. Doyle) and Might (S. R. Farland), in which Might again proved the master. They went up the back led by the mare and with Might hard held, taking 55sec for the first half-mile: and, with the pace increased, Might assumed the upper hand a furlong from the post and won the trial by half a length after taking lmin 47sec for the full distance. Might is working particularly well and he may yet prove an exception to the rule that old horses cannot' come back to win the New Zealand Cup. Cuddle was being asked for the first time since her resumption to show her paces and she will be the better for the gallop. Deficit (R. A. Dobson) gave early evidence that the track was not slow by sprinting half a mile in 50 2-ssec. Sigurd (A. Rule) and Accomplice (Dobson) ran six furlongs together in lmin 21sec. Cricket (Rule) was half a length in front of Lustral (Ddbson) after covering the same distance in lmin 22sec. Sunee (L. Nesbitt), picked up by Good Sun at the seven furlongs, went a mile in lmin 49sec, the last seven furlongs in lmin 34sec. Red Sun (Nesbitt.) did his mile well in lmin 48sec. Shy (J Nicolson) and Liane (B. E. Edwards) were swinging along together at the end of six furlongs in lmin 19sec, the last half-mile in 53 2-ssec. Arctic King (Nicolson) required lmin 43sec for an easy seven furlongs, the last half-mile in 58sec. Raroa (Farland) and Galteemore (Doyle) set off at a solid pace from the seven furlongs, running the first three furlongs in 37sec, and it was pot surprising they were stopping in the straight, the filly running on a length the better to complete in lmin 32sec. It was a good gallop by both horses. . Free Gold (Doyle), with the best of a poor start, was always in front of Revival (Farland) and Alunga (A. VV. Sim) over five furlongs in lmin 4sec, the last half-mile in 51sec. Alunga made up. a lot, of lost ground before the close, and he and Free Gold were both pleasing in their effort. There was another bad start to the trial in which Alloa (M. Reardon), Hinerawe (Sim), and Fairy Dale (R. D. Gerrard) were associated. Hinerawe came up from, behind to beat the pacemaking Alloa by a good length after the live furlongs had taken, lmin

7sec, the last half-mile In 53 l-ssec. Fairy Dale was handy at the post. Still another poor start saw the two-year-olds Peerless (Doyle) and Beauljr (Farland) leave Rejected (R. G. Dougan) at the three furlongs, and Peerless, though inclined to hang in, came on best to finish in front in 38 l-ssec. Trebor (Gerrard) shaded Kinloch at the end of five furlongs in lmin 7sec, - the last half-mile in 52 4-5 sec. 11. B. Lorigan's three two-year-bids, Twenty Grand (C. Sargent), Diareus (R. Lorigan), and War Cloud (Faulkiner) were sent half a mile, and I'wenty Grand was the leader without much between them till near the post, when Diareus drew level. From a standing start 52 seconds was good time. Among others to do useful tasks were Roaming (who looks well, though perhaps just a bit round yet), Rockingham, Happy Heels, and Settlement, Dissipation, Sunny Blonde, Camilla Horn, Nighllass, Piastre, Daricitig Flame, Punarua, Windward, OmaTere, Colin, and Mother-in-Law. Riding engagements for Masterton include:—S. Wilson, Peerless, Atctic King, Twilight Song, and Roaming; S. Anderson, Punarua; E. Burgess, Camilla Horn; G. R. Tattersall, ' Sunny Blonde; B. H. Morris, Twenty Grand; L. Faulkiner, Dancing Flame; S. R. Farland, Revival, Raroa; W. Doyle, Piastre, Fairy Dale, Free Gold, Aluhga, Omarere; A. E. Bennet, Might, Ilion, Mister Quex, Hinerawe. The racing at Masterton next .week starts at 12.5 p.m. each day.
