VAULTS IN THE ARCTIC

Subterranean vaults, tunnelled into frozen soil, may serve as natural storage refrigerators for fish, according to the expectations of one of the scientific commissions now engaged in opening up Russia's vast arctic empire. To keep the sea food fresh before canning, or while awaiting shipment to other parts of Russia, it would be stored in the proposed refrigeration tunnels, where it would freeze quickly and keep for an indefinite period. Only the top ten or twelve feet of Arctic soil thaws out during the summer, and the ice chambers would be excavated at underground levels known to remain solidly frozen all the year round.
