SOLDIERS' GRAVES

PLOT AT TAITA

To see whether a piece of land can be put aside in the Taita Cemetery for soldiers' graves, as is the case at Karori members of the Returned Soldiers' Association in the Hutt Valley and a representative of the Internal Affairs Department met the Taita Cemetery Board on Saturday afternoon. •The chairman of the Taita Cemetery Board (Mr. F. S. Hewer) said that the only piece of land available in the cemetery was one on the hillside overlooking the main entrance. A motor road led up to this section, and the board proposed to extend this road. At present the land was covered with gorse, and if the soldiers intended to accept the area it could be developed in sections, as it would be useless to clear all the land at once. The R.S.A. representatives commented favourably on the proposed site. It was stated that uniform headstones would be erected and the representatives of the returned men would probably come to an arrangement with the board as regards maintenance of the graves, the board to do the work and be recompensed for it. No finality was reached, and the board will consider the various suggestions.
