COURTCRAFT UNPLACED

ROSEHILL MEETING

HILL STAKES TO TALKING

(United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.)

SYDNEY, September 18. Favourites in Gold Hod, Ajax, and Talking shone at the Rosehill Meeting today. The weather was ' hot and "dold Rod won the Camellia Stakes in a manner fairly satisfying to his Epsom supporters. Although hard pressed by Hamurah, he came away in the last hundred yards to win by two lengths. Francis Drake, having his first outing since his arrival from New Zealand, ran only moderately, as did Country Party and Genetout. King's Head greatly disappointed; Arabia, on the other hand, threatened serious danger. Ajax, who fulfilled expectations _ up to the hilt in beating the strong finishing Caesar by two lengths in the Guineas, gave backers a thrill at the top of the straight, where Caesar caught him, but the challenge was short-lived. The Victorian colt _ retrieved the lead, and was going right away at the finish. He is bound to monopolise attention in Melbourne Cup discussions. * The Spring Handicap was won by Gay Knight, but it afforded no guide to the Metropolitan Handicap, owing to the muddling pace. The Hill Stakes was won all the way by Talking, and it also revealed tne good quality of the Victorian colt Avenger, who came from a long way back to finish second full of running. Avenger, according to Turf critics, looks to have a strong claim on the A.J.C. Derby. The New Zealander Courtcraft, who finished/Sixth, ran a fair race, and is expected to improve. . . The romance of St. Constant's win m the second division of the Higliweight Handicap is that Mr. Alan Cooper early this month sold the horse to J. Cook for twenty shillings, "because he was fed up with him." The Victorian colt Hua was given an exhibition gallop with Silver Standard after the Guineas. The large crowd was greatly interested in the Victorian crack, who finished about half a length in front over a mile and a quarter. The stewards inquired into trouble at the barrier in the Hill Stakes. Avenger, Only One, Courtcraft, and Allunga met serious interference, Allunga's rump being damaged by contact with tile rails. The New Zealand jockey P. Atkins told the stewards that CoUrtcraft was hampered by Allunga, but the stewards found it impossible to say who was at fault. The "Sunday Sun" states that Mr. Cooper intends to send Talking and Mala to the United States in the event of winning the Epsom-Metropolitan double, the objective being the Santa Anita Handicap of 100,000 dollars.
