LEPER APPEAL

EXCELLENT RESPONSE

Mr.' P. J. Twomey, of the Christchurch Gas Company, has so far received £900 in cash and several cases of goods for the lepers isolated at Makogai. The sympathy of the New Zealand people for these unfortunate I patients is increasing year by year. Since 1932, when Mr. Twomey made his first appeal, he has received in successive years £44, £144, £260, £565, and £1300. Thero are nearly 680 patients to share these gifts. Last year the funds permitted each patient to have a present at Christmas and at Easter time. Besides this the bed-ridden patients were supplied with little extra comforts throughout the year to help them to bear their hard lot in life. The appeal will continue for a little time longer, and when it is finished it is hoped that the funds will allow of each patient receiving gifts and' other comforts on the same scale as that of last year.
