PORIRUA CROSSING

Arrangements for railway access at the Porirua station were placed before the Makara County Council today by the Railway Department. Access to the goods yards from the west side of the line would be by a level crossing with gates at the north end of the yard, stated the Department. The access would be so arranged that it would not be convenient for vehicles to use it to gain access from the east to the west of the railway, but pedestrians would find no difficulty in crossing. The Department did not wish to have a public level-crossing on the site of the present crossing after the bridge was finished. Vehicular traffic between the east and west side of the line (except that for the Department's delivery siding) would have to cross the line by the new bridge. It would mean a slightly longer route, but the reduction of the risk of accident would more than compensate for that.
