BRISK INNINGS

GOLF IN AUSTRALIA

NETTLEFOLD DISQUALIFIED

KING'S CROSS

VATICAN BURGLARY

N.Z. AT SCARBOROUGH

ALL-SPEED ATTACK HACED

BRILLIANT FIELDING

(From the Special Correspondent of the United Press Association.)

SCARBOROUGH, September 9.

In reply to Leveson Gower's team's score of 380 New Zealand made 235 when the cricket match was continued today. Leveson Gower's team had made 105 for five wickets in the sec-

ond innings at stumps.

The all-speed attack, in ,vhich Gover, Nichols, and Wellard participated, 6et New Zealand a difficult task on a hard, fast wicket. Five batsmen were out for 150 runs, four being caught off snicks, by the wicketkeeper or in the slips.

Hadlee was in brilliant form, driving powerfully. He hit six 4's and one 6. The New Zealanders batted briskly, scoring much faster than the opposing team did yesterday.

Moloney hit four 4's in a brief but bright innings.

Donnelly was also enterprising, and Weir was confident and aggressive at a difficult time, eight 4's being included in his score. ,

A TIMELY STAND,

Eight men were out for 204 runs, but Lowry and Cowie smote the pace bowlers, despite the use ot the new ball, adding 74 runs. Cowie chose an opportune time to make his highest score of- the tour, hitting at almost every ball and scoring seven 4's. Lo.wry kept pace with him in % partnership which lasted only half ar hour. New Zealand accomplished a fine performance in dismissing rive of the opposition before stumps Brilliant fielding enhanced the deadliness of the bowling. Kerr took a good catch at square leg. Cowie made a spectacular one-handed effort at t mid-off, Roberts held a good running catch near the sight screen, and Gallichan held a cannon-ball return from Hardstaff. Gallichan bowled with a disconcerting blending of teasing length and varied flight. The attendance was again good, being approximately 10,000. FIVE PLAYERS SHARE LEAD

SYDNEY, September 9.

Five players share the lead at the end of the first round of the Australian open golf championship, which is being staged on the Australian Club's links at Kensington.

But for an unfortunate occurrence L. Nettlefold, the Tasmanian champion, would have led the field outright. He played the wrong ball to the first green and was penalised two strokes. He had a stroke round of 71.

The leaders at the end of the first round are: McKay, Kae, Crook, Rufus Stewart, F. Bolger, 72; Nettlefold, G. Naismith, yon Nida, Bourke, 73; Boorer, Booth, Bradshaw, W. Campbell, Petterson, Walker, H. Williams. V.'ishart, Harvey, 74.

■ Others include J. Ferrier, C. Gray. E. Cremin, 75; W. Holder, 76; Whitton, Keane, Richardson, 77; Hattersr ley, W. Bolger, Ward (New Zealand), 79; P. it. Godby (New Zealand), 97.

Ward played excellent tee shots, but in the early stages was astray with his approaches, making several visils to the bunkers. Later he missed half a dozen short putts, • but generally played very sound golf.

Godby started with B_at a par 4 hole and thereafter played without confidence, being frequently in the rough. He also took three putts on a number of greens.

Ferrier was disappointing, being erratic with the irons. -

(Received September 10, 11 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day, The disputes committee has disqualifield Nettlefold.
