GUILTY OF THEFT

NINE MONTHS' GAOL

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.

Pleading guilty to the theft of nearly £300 while a clerk in the employ of the New Zealand Government, Russell Frederick Organ was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment with hard labour by Mr. Justice Northcroft this morning. "I would not be doing my duty if I admitted you •to probation," said hia Honour. "You were in a position of trust. Were you granted leniency others similarly placed might think that the Court regards such offences as venial."

The charge was a serious one, said Dr. Haslam, who appeared for Organ, but it was the first time the accused had ever been in trouble and his previous record was excellent. He was handling over £1500 a week, his salary being £3. He had taken the amounts with the idea of making them good later, but his salary was too small to permit of that. .
