NEW OFFICERS

FOUR CHANCES

Since last Parliament was In session four important changes have taken place in the officers employed in Par-: liament Buildings, and when Parliament opened this afternoon there was a new Black Rod in the Legislative Council, a new Sergeant-at-Arms. new Chief Messenger, and new Assistant Chief Messenger in the House of Representatives. For many years the members of the House of Representatives have been summoned to attend upon his Excel-* lency the GovernQr-General for the opening of Parliament by Mr. A. T. Bothamley, 1.5.0., Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod, but Mr. Bothamley retired from that position during the recess and today the Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod was Captain Douglas Bryan. Changes were made necessary in the House of Representatives by the death of the Sergeant-at-Arms (Lieutenant- • Colonel S. G. Sandle) and of the Chief Messenger (Mr. F. W. Oakley). Today the Sergeant-at-Arms was LieutenantColonel A. J. M. Manson, M.C., and the Chief Messenger, Mr. J. R. Taylor, who was formerly Assistant Chief Messenger. The position of Assistant Chief Messenger is now filled by Mr. W. T. Brown.
