MADRID REFUGEES

EVACUATION PLANS

(Britisb Official Wireless.) (Received September 9, 11.45 a.m.) RUGBY, September 8. In view of the urgency of a request recently received from the International Red Cross Society for assistance in transporting from Valencia to.Marseilles refugees housed in the foreign embassies and legations in Madrid, the British Government has chartered the steamer Gibel Zerjon, a British ship belonging to the Bland Line, of Gibraltar, to evacuate all except men of military age and those housed in the French Embassy. In regard to the latter, the French Government will make its own arrangements. Four thousand refugees will be dealt with by the Gibel Zerjon, which will transport 100 on each journey, beginning towards the end of the current week. : It is further proposed that the British hospital ship Maine shall be available at Valencia later in the month for the evacuation of other civilians from Madrid.
