CONTROL OF MOTOR TRAFFIC

(To the Editor.) Sir,—l have held a driver's licence since 1913 and have managed to comply with the law during that period ■with the exception of one parking ticket here and in Christchurch. I read Mr. Semple's remarks as to the position in Christchurch, and while no one in his sober senses can possibly doubt his sincerity, it appears that Mr. Semple is being advised by armchair experts. Would it be impertinent to ask the names of his advisers and their practical experience? Prom my years of experience of the control in Christchurch I definitely assert that the present staff will .find it impossible to control the proposed extension, and it is a foregone conclusion that sooner or later Mr. Semple will have to step in and assume control. What authority will the Government have over these special areas? Will it have representation on the traffic committee? If the Minister is' prepared to force the issue in Christchurch, it is reasonable to assume that he will not hesitate to compel the Hutt Valley to hand over to Wellington, and Auckland suburbs to Auckland city. Judging by his present staff of courteous and efficient traffic inspectors, I, as a practical motorist, suggest to Mr. Semple that he extend his proposed sphere of operations and build up a worthwhile system on a solid foundation, —I am, PETROL TAX.
