THE CITY ELECTORATES

SOME IMPORTANT CHANGES

The map reproduced on this page shows the boundaries of the electorates for,the seven Wellington seats, as determined recently by the Representation Commission. There are s& number of interesting changes, especially the creation of Wellington West, the extensive alteration of Wellington Suburbs, and the condensation of the Hutt Electorate. Wellington West, in effect, replaces the existing Suburbs Electorate,- and a new Suburbs Electorate has been formed, extending in a great arc round the harbour and enclosing Hutt in an "island" position.

An outline of tho proposed alterations has already been- given j in' "The Post," but there are probably many electors who are still in the dark as to what ' electorate they are in. That need not worry them very much in the meantime. The proposals of the Commission have yet to be ratified, and electors had until August 30 to' lodge objections to the recommendations. When the objections have been considered the Commission will submit its final report to Parliament. In any event, whatever boundaries are finally decided upon, they will not operate until the expiry of the present Parliament. As soon as the final report has been presented the Electoral Department will proceed to form new rolls, and electors concerned will be advised in what districts they are entitled to vote at the next General Election. Wellington North now includes a small section of Wadestown, taking in the northern half of Sefton and Watt Streets and Orchard Street. The boundary runs down to the waterfront just on the city side of the floating; dock, and takes in the whole of the waterfront to the Clyde Quay Wharf. It then takes as its boundary Barnett Street, Tory Street, Buckle Street, Webb Street, and par1 of Aro Street up to the junction with Devon Street. The boundary line then runs along Fairlie Terrace, Kelburn Parade, Salamanca Road, and Wesley Road. From Wesley Road the boundary line runs through Anderson Park to the gates of the Botanical Gardens, whence it proceeds along the Tinakori Hills, joining up with Wadestown again at Weld Street. The district also includes Somes Island. Wellington West takes in all of Kelburn to the west of Kelburn Parade and Salamanca Road, Wilton Road, the whole of Northland. Karori, and Brooklyn. The boundary joins up with the Wellington North boundary at •Nairn Street, skirts Brooklyn, crosses the Mornington heights, and ends on the city side of the Ohiro Bay Settlement. ' . . The boundary of Wellington South runs from Tawa Street, Ohiro Bay, round the coast to Buckley Road. Houghton Bay. It then turns up Buck- I ley Road and Highgate Road and behind Newtown Park, proceeding through the Town Belt to join up with Wellington Central at the corner of Ruahine and Goa Streets. From that point it runs behind the infectious dis*,

eases hospital and Government. House, to John Street, along Tasman Street, ■Finlay Terrace, Wallace Street, and Bell Road to the boundary of Wellington West described above. The boundary of Wellington East runs right round the coast from Ohiro /Bay to Belvedere Road, Evans Bay, and through Tapiri Road to the junc-tion-of Goa Street and Ruahine Road, from which point it continues along the same route as the Wellington South boundary, coming out again at Houghton Bay. Wellington Central runs round the coast from Belvedere Road to Clyde Quay Wharf. It then goes through. Barnett Street, Tory Street,' Buckle Street, Webb Street, Nairn . Street, Bell Road, Bidwill Street, Wallace Street. Finlay Terrace, Tasman Street, John Street, Hospital Road, . and through to Ruahine Street and Tapiri Street, and back to Belvedere Road. Wellington Suburbs, as newlydefined, takes in Wadestown (with the exception of the small area in Wellington North), Ngaio, Khandallah, Johnsonville, Tawa Flat, Korokoro, Moiling, part of Lower Hutt, north of the V.I.C. corner, Taita, Wainui-o-mata, and all the bays on the eastern side of the harbour. The' Hutt electorate comprises the whole of the boroughs of Lower Hutt and Petone east of the railway line and south of the V.I.C. corner.
