Special forecast for Wellington:— Moderate to strong southerly winds, gale force being reached at times. Weather cold and changeable, with occasional passing showers. The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today for the ensuing" twenty-four hours, is for moderate to strong southwesterly to southerly winds, gale force being reached in places, especially about Cook Strait and on the east coast south of Castlepoint. The weather in western districts of the South Island will be fair to fine, but elsewhere it will be cool and changeable with passing showers. Hail is probable in places and snow on the ranges.' Conditions will improve later in western and northern districts.

The depression which crossed the northern portion of the North island yesterday has disappeared eastward, but a deeper depression is still located to the far south of New Zealand, and a secondary to this has now crossed the South Island. Pressure has fallen to the east, but over the Dominion pressure is • rising owing to the approach of an anticyclone across the western Tasman Sea. Winds, which yesterday were moderate and somewhat variable, were this morning mainly westerly or south-westerly in direction, and they had increased in force, especially in the far north and on the southern and eastern coasts of the South Island. The weather generally has been rather unsettled, with scattered light rains in most districts, but East Cape reports a fall of 174 points during the last twenty-four hours.

Auckland's weather yesterday was cloudy, with intermittent light rain which totalled three points in all. A light wind between north and east prevailed. This morning a moderate wind from the south-south-east was blowing and the sky was overcast. Wellington had calm, mild, and pleasant conditions. The morning was mostly overcast, but during the afternoon there were a few intervals of sunshine. About 9 p.m. some light rain fell. Hours of bright sunshine totalled 3.3, and two points of rain were recorded at Kelburn.

In Christchurch the weather was fair, although for the most part cloudy, a light easterly wind changing to a cold southerly during the afternoon. A fresh south-westerly was blowing there this morning, the sky at 9 a.m. being clear.

Dunedin had fair weather, but it clouded over in the afternoon and some showers fell during the night, the total fall of rain being five points. A light northerly wind prevailed yesterday, but a west-south-westerly gale was blowing this morning, although the sky was clear.
