TABLE TENNIS

N.Z. TITLES

PLAY IN FINALS

■The New Zealand table tennis championships were concluded in the Wellington Winter Show. Stadium at 1.30 this morning. Auckland won all events, although Wellington was very unlucky in several of the finals.

One point in either of four consecutive rallies would have given E. Boniface, of Wellington, the New Zealand men's singles title. He wa? leading 20-16 in the fifth and deciding set, and had to make 21 to^ win the title, but Cantlay (Auckland) took six consecutive points. Cantlay played with great confidence in the first set and continued attacking in the second. Boniface attacked recklessly in the third set, led 19-5, and won the set 20-10.1 Both contestants made frequent errors in the fourth set, but Boniface was the stronger in defence. Cantlay gained an early lead 'in the deciding set, ■ but Boniface, with strong forehand drives, equalled and led 19-16 on service. Cantlay was lucky in evening, the score with a net ball, and his greater steadiness gave him the title. Hughes and Miss Tustin (Wellington) were twice within a point' of victory in the-final'of the mixed doubles against Drabble and Mils McAdam (Auckland), but the latter won, 11-21', 22-20, 21-14. , Played at a fast pace, the Cantlay v. McFarlane third round match was one of the best contests of the tourney. Both played brilliantly, but the luck was with Cantlay, who edged and netted no fewer than nine points/ to McFarlane's'two in the fifth and deciding match. McFarlane, for a "pen" holder, drove with great accuracy and excellent placement. Cantlay com--bined strong defence with excellent attack on both backhand and forehand. F. Paton (Auckland), the present champion of his province and New Zealand champion in 1935, was defeated in.the third round by the young Wellington representative, E. Boniface, in a four-set match. The Auckland player was strong ,in defence, but Boniface was much more aggressive in nis forehand drives. The Cheal (Auckland) v. Wilson (Wellington) match was fought with great determination by both players, who made many good saves from apparently irretrievable shots. Wilson was'aggressive in his forehand drives, but Cheal played for openings, 'and won many points on his tactics. Both Boniface and Cantlay had comfortable wins in the singles quarterfinals, .in which they defeated v Hughes and Pyne respectively. Miss I. Dover, the holder of the New Zealand ladies' singles title, beat Miss K. Tustiri in straight sets. Miss McAdam (Auckland), although superficially awkward in her style of play, handled Miss Hughes's "chop" with confidence. '. Misses L. Hughes (Manawatu) and Bennett (Otago) were not so experienced in combination as Misses Wilkinson and McAdam, the winners of the women's doubles finals. Miss Dove (Auckland) lost her New Zealand singles title to Miss Wilkinson (Auckland) in a "ping-pong" contest, in which neither contestant was prepared to take risks, though Miss Dove gained many points with forehand drives whenever favourable opportunities presented themselves.
