JUST BEDSPREADS

TIME BRINGS COLOUR

Many years ago bedspreads were just bedspreads. They were invariably made of white, stiff, starched material, and were exactly the same throughout the house. There was nothing distinctive about them, and they added nothing to the harmony of the home furnishings, states an overseas writer.

Nowadays, the bedspread reflects the design of. the bedroom it furnishes, and tremendous care is taken with its design. Bedspreads are now masculine and plain, or feminine and fluffy, and not only their material but their design is of importance. In America, the newest bedspread for a modern room is made of leather texed fabric in a lizard motif, and also for the modern room are the bedspreads of lipstick, red satin, and other rich colours.

Furnishings in other countries are, however, more conservative, and ultrabright colours are not very popular. The new embossed tapestry bedspreads. in tones of gold. pink, green, and blue, are fashionable, and are equally as suitable for the modern room as they are for a room furnished with period furniture.

Most feminine of all are the real Brussels lace bedspreads, with intricate hand-made designs and medallions. . •

Spotted muslin, made with numerous frills and flounces, will also t^ive a foft effect to the bedroom.' Plain styles, however, remain the most popular, and eminently suitable for them are the cottage weave bedsoreads. which mad be had in every shade, and a '.variety of striped effects.

Plain linen throwover bedspreads are a sign of the modern desire, for laboursaving devices. ■ Chintz has come into, its own recently as a furnishing fabric, and quilted chintz is now a popular bedspread material. For more luxurious Quilting, taffeta is the best material.

Blankets also have, grown in imwprtance' during the lastfew years, and it is possible to obtain them in all soft colours, and in smart checked designs. In America, vivid red, blue, and green blankets are gaining in favour, and even plaid designs have their buyers. ■ V . *

Colour is also applied to. sheets, and sheets in pastel shades, embroidered by their own colours, are effective. Many white sheets feature bindings in pirik, blue, yellow, and green,; and have pillowslips to match.: and some plain white sheets have white:embroidered designs.
