HELPING V.M.C.A.

SPRING FAIR OPENED

FLOWER-BEDECKED STALLS

"The flowers that bloom in the (spring, tra-la," was a song the strains iof which seemed to be "in the air" at the fair at the V.M.C.A. yesterday afternoon. Designated "Spring Fair," it was certainly a very cheerful, function, and spring flowers were the most prominent features in the decorations. Colourful streamers were strung across the ceiling almost obscuring it from view, and the stalls were framed by painted trellises over which clambered dainty roses, and entwined imitation "daffydown dillies," winter poppies, and chrysanthemums. One of the most picturesque stalls was that devoted to the sale of sweets. Fronted by a white "apron" edged with a freize of daffodils, It was decorated with" a flower-decked trellis through which dainty miniature Chinese lanterns shed a fairylike glimmer. Pink flowers were/ set between the goods which were, displayed to the best advantage and which found a ready sale

among the large crowd of generous buyers. Each stall, was decorated in a style which, though individual, conformed to the main theme of spring.

The stage where the official party sat was surrounded by pots of palms and greenery, and was backed by a wide maroon curtain. :

Mrs. Len Greenberg (late president of the ladies' auxiliary) was in the chair. She remarked that it was one of the biggest efforts Of the auxiliary daring the year. The funds obtained were donated, as, a Christmas. gift to the association, and this year it was their object to raise £ 100. Brief speeches were also made by Mrs. R. S. Maunder (president of the V.M.C.A. .ladies' auxiliary) and Mr. R. H. "Nimmo (president of the Y.M.CiA.). Mrs. Maunder spoke eulogistically of the work done for many years,by Mr. and Mrs. Greenberg. A message sent by Mr. Greenberg from Dunedin, conveying greetings and best wishes for a successful fair, was read. Mr. Nimmo, on behalf of the board of directors, endorsed all Mrs. Maunder , had said abou; the work done by Mr. and Mrs. Greenberg, and paid attribute to the .ladies' auxiliary; saying that he \ had seen a great deal of the.work of the V.M.C.A. ladies' auxiliaries in : both America and, Hawaii, but that none could compare with.that of the Wellington body. \ Mr. Will Mason (interim administrator of the V.M.C.A.) added a few words of gratitude for the work of the ladies' auxiliary. Otherstoi the official party were Mrs. Nimmo, Mrs. D. L. Gibson (secretary of the ladies' auxiliary), and Mrs. J. Hannah (treasurer). Lady Myers, in declaring the fair open, made a brief speech wishing Mrs; Greenberg success and happiness in the future. ! Bouquets of spring flowers were presented to Lady Myers,' Mrs. Greehberg, and Mrs. Maunder, and Mrs. Morrish, who sang "Spring Is Here," and her accompanist, Miss Iris Mason, received posies.
