RAIN WELCOMED

Intending patrons of the Wanganui Jockey Club's Spring Meeting next Thursday and Saturday felt very despondent on Monday when the rain fell in torrents. However, Tuesday showed a vast improvement, and as the course is a light, sandy one, the rain would probably be of great benefit. Farmers and gardeners rejoiced greatly, for the water shortage in the country was becoming serious. For the past six weeks the weather has been perfectly fine, and hoses, have been necessary in the gardens. Almost empty tanks have, been a source of trouble to country households. Morning Tea. Members of the Okoia branch of the W.D.F.U. met at the D.I.C. recently at a tea party given in honour of their president for the past five years, Mrs. Gregor McLeod. A charming bouquet was presented to Mrs. McLeod, with the appreciation of her work during the year. A Farewell Tea. Many of the old girls who attended the Wanganui Girls' College during its first year,1 forty-seven years ago, met on Tuesday morning to bid farewell to one of their number, Miss E. J. Currie, who has been on the teaching staff ever since her school days; prior to her trip to England. A memento from her old friends was given to Miss Curi'ie. Among those present were Mesdames O. Hales, J. C. Wickham, H. Lewis,. C. Strouts,' I. Duncan, M. Soundy, and Misses E. Morgan, N. Bridge, and M. Proude. Personals. Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Miles were Wellington visitors at the weekend. Mr.; and Mrs. J. R. Sutclifle, Wellington, are visiting Wanganui. Miss B. McClurg, Napier, is the guest of Mrs. C. Dickie," "Hayes," Waverley. Mrs. J. Murphy and Miss I. Long, Auckland, are visiting Mrs. T>. Quickenden at Patea. Mr. and Mrs., G. Faull, Timaru, are visiting Mrs. A. Harper, "Wattlebank.". Mr. and Mrs. J. Calver; are visiting Wellington. ! Sliss Mollie McDonald is touring in the North Auckland district. Mr. and Mrs., Peters, Napier, were visitors at the, weekend. ■ Mrs. A. A. Bending and family, Mastertoh, spent the last few days of the school holidays at Wanganui. ■ Miss Cole, a Wanganui delegate to the .League of Nations Union meeting at Wellington, has returned home. Mrs. W, Gibson, Wellington, is visiting' Mrs;: T.: Blennerhassett. ;Miss Mary Edhouse was bidden farewell''by the- staff of the Waimarino Hospital on the occasion of leaving to join.the Wanganui Hospital. A fountain pen and many good wishes go with her to her new appointment.
