WHAT OF ELIMINATIONS?

Prior to the announcement of the conditions for the Trotting Cup some kite-flying was done in the newspapers, in which it was suggested that Red Shadow and Roi lOr should be included in the list of has-beens which should be debarred from entry. Such a proceeding, says the "Timaru Herald,** could hardly be contemplated tar; the club. Last summer Red Shadow ftnuhea third in the Auckland Cup in 4min 16 l-ssec, the fastest two miles of the season, and won the President's Handicap at Auckland from 4min 23sec. His latest assessment is 4min 22sec, the third fastest in the Dominion. Roi lOr last autumn won at Forbury from the 4min 21sec line, and as late as last Easter he finished third m the main event at Addington from 4mm 20seCj going 4min 21 l-ssec on'a dead track and registering the fastest time at the meeting. Another suggestion was that no owner should be allowed to start more than two horses, the idea obviously being to eliminate Tempest This horse on the final day of' the August . meeting defeated Reporter, Gamble, and Bingen Palm, whom tit is sought to include, and finished Up the meeting by winning the fast, sprintrace. There may be no thought of excluding any of these horses, but the fact that they w,ere specially mentioned in some propaganda has created an uneasy feeling. To attempt; to eliminate Roi lOr and Red Shadqw would be a direct hit- at the handicapping table. As late as August 1, Roi lOr wa« assessed on 4min 20sec, and Red Shadow on 4min 22sec, the only other horse within those limits being Indianapolis on 4min 20sec, and it would be peculiar if some other i committee declared them unfit for a 4mia 26sec race. ~ ,
