WELL-BRED NOVICES

GOLD TRAIL'S HALF-SISTER

The majority of the horses racing at Wanganui tomorrow are known, to racegoers, but there are nevertheless a few newcomers or little-raced horses in the maiden event, and others are returning after lengthy absences. The "unknown quantities" among the various maidens include two or three of breeding to turn out useful.

White Gold is a member of the Desert Gold- branch of , the' Aura •family, being no other than a three-year-old chestnut'half-sister by Hunting Song to Gold. Trail (Auckland Gup) and Desert' Chief. Her dam, Pure Gold, is a daughter of Psychology and Desert Gold, and she is the third offspring. She will carry the colours of her breeder, Mr. T. H. Lowry. . Great Memory, who will be Sir Charles Clifford's representative in the field, and who has also, not yet raced, Is a three-year-old bay filly by The Tetrarch horse Magnus from the Autumnus—Telescope mare Retrospect, a Mermaid descendant who earlier at the stud left Back Thrust and Recollection. The only Magnus horse that has raced to date is Great Bramble, who won the Autumn Nursery at the C.J.C. Autumn Meeting. Magnus, who was expected to leave speedy stock, had only a short Career of three seasons at the stud prior to his death last year.

Mnhutai, who had a single outing last season, is a three-year-old brown gelding by Hunting Song from the Prince • Willonyx—Barcarole mare Humoresque, dam previously of Megaphone and also descending from the Mermaid taproot, and he is now owned by Mrs. M. Heedy, whose late

husband bought him privately from his breeder, Mr. K. S. Williams. Humoresque was full-sister to Town Major, a horse who performed well under winter conditions some years ago.

Florence Mills, who is being raced by her breeders, Messrs. H. H. Pharazyn and M. Greenwood, of Hastings, formerly the owners of Motere (Auckland Cup), is a three-year-old brown filly by Nigger Minstrel from the Lord Quex—Lovematch mare Liaison, a full-sister to Motere. This filly Is herself a full-sister to Quadroon, both being trained now at Awapuni by L. Wilson. Newcomers among the older horses are Amoroso and Civil. Amoroso is a four-year-old chestnut gelding by Philamor (sire of Kindheart) from the Psychology—Lovelock mare Amourette,, a close relative to Lovematch (above) and also to Wotan, Peter Jackson,. Game Carrington, etc., and he will be raced by the Ngatarawa trainer J. H. Jeflferd, who secured him in January from his breeder, Mr. G. Gerard. Civil is the five-year-old brown mare by, Grand Knight from that fine Elysian mare Civility, thus a full-sister to Bold Baron, and she will carry the colours of Mr. H. M. Speed, of Wanganui, who holds a partnership share in her with her other joint breeder, Mr. C. G: Russell, and who appears to have exercised plenty of patience with her.
