TEMPORARY BASE

PAN-AMERICAN AIRWAYS

PROVISIONAL APPROVAL

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, September 7.

Plans for a temporary base for PanAmerican Airways in Auckland were provisionally approved by the Auckland Harbour Board at a meeting in committee after the immediate requirements of the company had been explained by Mr. Harold Gatty, special representative of Pan-American Airways interests in New Zealand and Australia.

The board is willing to lease to PanAmerican Airways for five yearrf an area of land 150 ft by 100 ft adjacent to the breastwork near the shore end of the eastern breakwater in Mechanics Bay, and to make available an area of clear water space 500 ft wide immediately inside the breakwater. The proposals will be submitted by Mr. Gatty to his principals in the United States.

The chairman of the board, the Hon. T. Bloodworth, M.L.C., said it was hoped the matter would be finalised at a meeting of the board to be held next Tuesday. It was explained by Mr. Bloodworth that Mr. Gatty had indicated the accommodation that was required and had pointed out that present requirements would be temporary only. He had said that nothing in the nature of permanent accommodation would be necessary for probably five years, by which time it was hoped the service would be stabilised and the company would be in a position more clearly to indicate its requirements for permanent accommodation. Mr. Gatty desired that arrangements should be made as soon as possible, Mr. Bloodworth added. "With that in view the board met and discussed details with him."
