WELLINGTON WIN OUTSTANDING DISPLAY (By Telegraph—Press. Association.) AUCKLAND, September 5. The annual women's Dominion championship basketball tournament concluded on Saturday in favourable weather. The winner of the. championship was Wellington, with. 10 points, Auckland being runner-up with eight. Southland Minor with 14 points won the second grade competition, and Wairoa, 13, won the third grade. Wellington went through the tournament without a loss, and in every match gave an outstanding display. Results of matches on Saturday are: First Grade.—^Canterbury 20, Southland 18; Auckland 16, Otago 9; Wellington 25, Hawke's Bay 6; Canterbury 22, Hawke's Bay 13; Wellington 14, Otago 10; Auckland 14, Southland 13. Second Grade.—South Canterbury 21, Wairarapa 11; Southland Minor 15, Ashburton J ?; Butt Valley 12, Poverty Bay 11;-Southland Minor 17, Hutt Valley 10; Ashburton 24, South Canterbury 17; Ashburton 20, Taranaki 18; Poverty Bay 15, Taranaki 12; South Canterbury 17, Taranaki 16; Poverty Bay 12, Southland Minor 10; Manawatu 26, Waikato 17. . A' thrilling exhibition was given Jn the match between teams representing the North and South Islands, which | was won by the former by 19 points to 12. At the beginning the South Island attacked strongly.but the northern defenders cleared and .scored two opening goals in quick succession. Play was spirited, and both teams broke down strong attacking movements by brilliant interceptions. The South Island forwards were given a good share of the ball, but the excellent work pj the three North Island defenders gave them little opportunity to score, the first spell ending with the score 9-5 in favour of the north. North Island was the first to score in the second half, but a clever interception by the south defenders gave them a goal after a spirited exhibition of passing, The final score . was; North 19, South 12. , .- ; .
