The Union Company liner Awatej entered -Sydney 'Heads at 7.3 a.m from Auckland, after establishing £ new record for the Tasman crossing of 57 hours 33 minutes, clipping 2( minutes off the Monterey's time. , A radio meisage from a representa tive of the "Sydney Morning Herald/ on board, received here last night stated: "We cleared Auckland harbou'i at 11 p.m. on' Friday in heavy ran and with very low visibility. We passet Cape Maria at 8 a.m, on Saturday ii a moderate westerly. Today's run o 555 miles was a record for the.Awate; or probably for any other ship south o: the Line, despite a strong westerly anc a big sea from 4 a.m." ; After 8 o'clock last night- the stronj westerly wind rose again, but thi Awatea maintained good time. There was tremendous excitement or board yesterday, and at luncheor passengers made congratulatory speeches on the day's run. Sydney shipping circles took a keer interest in the .Awatea's, performance TOP SPEED 24 KNOTS. The Awatea's top speed- was 2' knots. This was maintained for < couple of hours on Saturday. Captain Davey said that the vesse experienced about twenty : hours o fair . weather during the voyage anc encountered three separate gales. I had to contend with heavy heac winds, and rough seas during most o: Sunday'and early this morning. Captain Davey has received a cabls from Captain Meyer, of the Mariposa as follows:—"Hearty congratulation: on an excellent run. Kindest regards.'
