MATCH IN PROGRESS

PLAY IN FIRST SPELL

South Africa started well and in the early stages were making most of the play, their backs getting away in some flashing passing movements. Williams, the speedy winger, made two fine dashes. In the first he was well stopped by Phillips and on the other occasion his kick to the centre in the New Zealand twenty-five was snapped up by King, the New Zealand captain. Harris created further excitement with a "pot" he took at goal, but he was unsuccessful.

New Zealand had been called upon to show their defensive qualities and so far they had stood up to the testing they had received. Dick especially among the New Zealand backs had done some very fine work in this department. From a line-out the New Zealand forwards broke away and led by King and Dalton' took play right down to within a few yards of the South African goal-line. A penalty kick to South Africa eased the pressure.

There was ■ no.- score after, fifteen minutes' play. Dalton, Jackson, and Reid took 'New Zealand away from a dangerous position about eight yards from the line, but Brand kicked advantageously to within a few yards of the line. Hooper took Babrow brilliantly when the centre tried to break through and kicked through to Brand, whose kick to touch was forced down by Dick as it rolled over the jgoaMine. The Springboks, back and forwards, were attacking with great determination 'and Harris broke through, but Trevathan went back to get him.

So far South Africa had had a definite advantage in the set scrums. A neat piece of combined play by New Zealand started by the backs and carried on by the forwards had the pringboks hard on the defence. A scrum was ordered and when Simon was able to send the ball back Trevathan potted, and only just missed the posts. Shortly afterwards he had another shot, but again failed. There was a full-throated roar from the crowd when after 35 minutes' play New Zealand scored after an attack which, beat the Springboks back from half-way.. Trevathan did not convert. New Zealand 3 South Africa 0 This was followed up by a spectacular try by Sullivan. There was no conversion, making the score at halftime New Zealand 6 South Africa 0
