ALL-NIGHT DUEL
SHANGHAI ARTILLERY
FUTILE CHINESE VALOUR
SHANGHAI, September 3.
An artillery duel in which Japanese warships participated proceeded all night. The Japanese claim to have captured' the Lion Forest forts at Woosung, but have not dislodged the Chinese from Paoshan. The Japanese had the air to themselves and heavily bombed the Chinese positions. A sample of futile Chinese valour was afforded by a party aboard an old junk at Pootung Point who ma-chine-gunned the Japanese cruisers, which answered,by shelling the junk at point-blank range. The incident caused a stampede from the Bund. The Japanese are heavily shelling Chapei. Two Chinese shells penetrated the Japanese Consulate, seriously wounding four Japanese. They also damaged a Japanese transport. A shrapnel burst during the afternoon sprayed the British Consulate, but there were no casualties among the staff.
