UNPROMISING FORECAST

, Forecast for Wellington:—

Strong south-easterly to easterly winds to gale force at times. Weather dull and misty with further rain, possibly heavy at times.

The forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued by the Meteorological office at noon today, is for. south-easterly winds about Cook Strait and westerlies at North Auckland, otherwise winds between east and north-east prevailing, moderate to strong generally and reaching gale force in places. Weather unsettled, dull, and misty, with rain in most districts, heavy falls being probable in many places. Pressure has remained rather high to the north of New Zealand and east of the South Island, but a widespread complex depression over the Tasman Sea extends across the North Island. South-easterlies or southerlies prevailed over parts of the East Coast and Cook Strait and.have been fresh to strong in the latter area, but .otherwise the winds have .been moderate in force mainly, and rather variable -in direction. The weather has been mostly fair in the west and in the southern portions of the South Island, but elsewhere unsettled and overcast conditions have prevailed with fairly widespread rain. Since last night some rather heavy falls.have occurred m the northern half of the North Island. At Auckland yesterday the weather was unsettled, with intermittent rain. A moderate west to north-west wind prevailed. This morning it was cloudy with a fresh west-south-west wind. The rainfall was 39 points. •Wellington had a dull and gloomy day with occasional light rain, accompanying a south-easterly breeze. Heavier rain fell in the early hours of today. The rainfall amounted to 16 points. , . In Christchurch the early partof the morning was fine but most of the day was overcast, with a light southwesterly breeze. This morning a fresh south-westerly wind was blowing, and the sky was still overcast Dunedin had a dull day with a light north-east wind. Some light showers Sin the night. This morning it was cloudy with a north-east wind.
