AUSTRALIA INVADED
A novel .with a purpose is "The Awakening," by Captain G. D. Mitchell, which is published by Angus and Robertson, Ltd., Sydney. It sounds a.1 clarion call for an effective defence programme for Australia, as the Et. Hon. W. M. Hughes points out .in a foreword, and pictures the fate that one day may overtake Australia.
The scene opens in 1938, when the inhabitants of the coastal towns of Queensland and New South Wales are attacked without warning by an enemy from vhe sea. Ships and seaplanes rain destruction upon them. The desired prize is, of course, the huge but practically unoccupied continent, but this rich prize is not obtained very easily in spite of Australia being unprepared to resist aggression. The hero of the story gets together a very mixed commando, and conducts a guerrilla war against the invaders, but after a series of epic fights the'commando is exterminated.
This is an exciting narrative, and may serve its purpose in making Australian politicians alive to the fact that peace will best be preserved if one is prepared for war. s
