COURT ADJOURNS
LAW BALL REVELS
Impressive legal-looking documents, coldly worded, and couched in a tricky maze of legal phraseology were issued to hundreds of Wellington people recently. Folded in the style' of affidavits, and lucidly printed with concise facts and figures on the outside, they were "summonses" to the annual Law Ball, which was held in St. Franci3 Hall last nighti .Given by the Wellington taw Students' Society and the Victoria, ..University College Law Faculty... Club, the ball is always an eagerly anticipated event, and has the reputation of being one of the best dances of the year. Last night's function was' no exception.
The decorations in the hall were most • effective. A huge, boat-shaped cluster of multi-coloured balloons was suspended from -the ceiling, and entirely surrounded the sparkling silver ball.in the centre. Soft lights shone through other clusters on the walls, and the hall viewed from above, with the bright colours of the balloons
vicing with the frocks of the women, presented a harlequin appearance.
At one stage during the evening the floor was cleared, and the lights turned off one- by one, until the hall was almost in complete darkness. Then the spotlights picked out the graceful forms of a ballet, trained by Mrs. P. B. Cooke, and which had previously danced at the Plunket Ball. With their full-skirted frocks of mauve swirling round their feet, the dancers resembled "will o' the wisps" as the spotlights flickered from one elusive figure to another, but catching none for long. Those who took part in the ballet (which .was entitled "Melody; in "Mauve") were "the Misses Patricia Gilmer, June Reid", Patsy Ashbolt,. M. Vause, Paddy Hope Gibobns, M. Beverley-Smith, Helen Staverley, Georgette Handy side, M. McLay, Mary Allen, and Molly Robinson. At the conclusion of the dance, the whole assembly formed into a long, winding snake, and writhed in and out round the hall in time to stirring music from the orchestra.
A dainty supper'of savouries, cakes, and 'other dishes was served downstairs, where the long tables were decorated with pastel-green baskets of daffodils.
The Hon. Sir John Reed and Lady Reed were host and hostess for the evening. Lady Reed was in a frock of submarine blue over which she wore a grey fur cape. Those in the official party comprised the Hon, Mr. Justice Smith and Mrs. Smith, Mr, P. B. Cooke, K.C., and Mrs. Cooke, Mr. W, F. Stilwell, S.M., and Mrs. Stilwell, Mrs. Luxford, Mr; D. R.
