LONDON'S SCHOOLS

(To tft* Editor.)

Sh*,—ln the "Evening ' Post" of I August 31, I read an account of the ; New Zealand High Comfiiissioner.'s "i visit to his old school at Old Street, Lukes, EC. It was mentioned that the school is capable of accommodating " 800 pupils, and it pfoVides clothing for , 250 o£ them yearly. I would like to> . mention that there are a good fnany - ■ such schools in Great Britain. On« that I know is the^ NeWcomen School, ; situated in Newcomen Street, in th* Boro, London, SE. I cannot fcay "** if the school is still there, but it wai when I was a boy. The school wa* - founded by a wealthy merchant, wlio died duririg the latter part of the six- '. teenth century and who left a large sum of money to provide a school for the education and clothing of a certain number of pupils born in the parish ■ of St. George, the martyr ill the district of Southwark, London, SE. The City of London also provides education and school uniforms free to boys and : girls on condition that one or both of the parents were born within the City bi London*. My mother was born. : in Seething Lane, Eaatcheap, in the City of London, and I was entitled to those privileges, but through some mistake my brothers and myself riiissed the chanc!e. Another privilege is that the child, with the parents' consent, could become an apprentice to a freeman of the city, all expenses being paid.- AnotHer school was 'the Bill* Coat School, situated In Negate Street, EC, but since removed t* Horsham, Sussex. The scholars wear « long dark blue coat, white tie,, and yellow stockings arid shoes, and go> bareheaded. —I am, etc., A. G. WHVMAHK.
