MAORI CHAMPIONSHIPS

GISBORNE, September 3. The New Zealand Maori golf championships were concluded today. The1 tournament was to have started ont Tuesday, but was postponed till tha following day on account of rain. The opening games were played in misty weather on Wednesday, Thursday was fine, but rain prevailed again today when the semi-finals and finals were decided. Eighty-nine players participated, 60 men and 29 women, all parts of the North Island being represented. Results:— Men's Championship. — Semi-finals: D. B. Barry (Gisborne) beat L. Paewai (Dannevitke), 3 and 2; W. T. Kuru (Waipukurau) beat J. Hape (Dannevirke)j at the twenty-third hole. Final: Kuru beat Barry, 3 and 1. -; : Women's Championship.—Semi-finals: Miss T. Chase (Wairoa) beat Miss H. Mitchell (Rotorua), 5 and 3; Mrs. J. Hape (Dannevirke) beat Mrs. K. Tareha (Waipawa), 1 up at the nineteenth. Final: Mrs. Hape beat Miss Chase, 2 up.
In the Pitt Shield district competition for teams of two men and two women players, 15 teams entered, the winners being Waiohika-Waimarama with 297. Waipawa were second with. 303 and Dannwirke third with 306. A teams match, northern district in the North Island versus southern, 12 players a-side, resulted in south winning by 920 to 939. In the women's teams match south won easily.
