I Sir Abe Bailey, the owm-r of the Gimcrack Stakes winner, Golden Sovereign, has had a remarkably good run this season. He was successful in the Ebor Handicap^ run on the second day of the York Meeting, with Weathervane, and up till July 12 his horses had collected £15,895 in prizemoney. Golden' Sovereign made a good Impression ' when he ran second to Unbreakable in the Soltykoff Stakes at Newmarket iii July. _ . He is a goodlooking son of Monarch (a. son of. Tracery), and was bought at the Dublin Sales last August for 2700 guineas by H. L. Cottrill for his patron, Sir Abe Bailey. This is stated to be the highest price ever paid for a yearling at the Dublin Sales. Fleche dOr II was carrying the colt when she came under the hammer at the Newmarket December Sales, and failed, to make the modest reserve placed upon her. .An Irish breeder gave the reserve for her subsequently. An English writer some weeks ago ventured an opinion which events might justify, when he stated that "if Golden Sovereign does not one day make a good horse for Sir, Abe Bailey then he will belie his very- good looks." ■.
