BILLIARDS CHAMPIONSHIP ♦ In last evening's games of the Wellington provincial anriateur billiards championship, played at Billiards Limited showrooms, J. Petley, of the Commercial Travellers' Club, beat F. A. Wells, of the G.P.O. Social and Literary Club, and R. C. Butters of the Commercial Travellers' Club, beat E. W. Petersen, of the Federal Club. In > the early game both contestants were in good touch, and consistently scored useful figures. The respective tallies showed little variation until the final stage, when Petley drew ahead to win by 300 to 260. The best breaks were: Petley, 27, 23. 25, 22, 21; Wells, 22, 21, 22, 30, 28. Butters' soon achieved the lead from Petersen, who is the ' Wellington snooker champion. The latter was much below his usual form, and as the game developed Butters, who was the more consistent, was not seriously challenged, and eventually won by 300 to 253. The best breaks were: Butters. 26, 20, 36; Petersen, 20. The games were controlled by Mr. J. Meldrum. who has £>een elected to referee the New Zealand, championship, beginning next, week. Tonight at 7 o'clock the present Wellington champion, C. Peek, will meet D. McKenzie, who opposed him in the finaMast year. At 8 p.m. the New Zealand amateur champion, S. Moses, will play A.
