POLICE FORCE

SHORTER WEEK

TO BE INTRODUCED SOON

The introduction of shorter hours in the Police Force is to be made shortly, when the 125 recruits now in training at Trentham will have completed their course of training.

Last April the Minister in Charge of Iho Police Department (the Hon. P. Fraser), in announcing certain improvements in the pay and hours of the force, said it had been decided to reduce the hours of work by the police from 56 to 43 per week as soon as a sufficient number of men could be trained to augment the force.

Today Mr. Fraser said that the announcement of the reduction in hours had been received with general satisfaction among members of the Police Force, and not the least sign of disappointment had reached him because the hours could not be reduced to 40 at one reorganisation.

"Members of the Police Force today, from reports received by myself," added Mr. Fraser, "have never been more satisfied and confident that their interests will be safeguarded than at the present time. Never at any previous time was the force more contented, better in. discipline, and efficient than it is now.

"In this respect I would like to pay a well-deserved tribute to the Police Commissioner (Mr. D. J. Cummings) and his officers."
