STATION NURSERY

(To the Editor.) Sir,—No doubt many Wellingtonmothers welcomed the announcement of the opening of a.day nursery at the new station, the city being sadly lacking in facilities of this nature. From information supplied to me by railway officials it appeared that the nursery would be available for general use and recently I decided to leave my child there while I spent the morning shopping. After waiting some time for the nursery to open I was surprised, and not a little inconvenienced, when the attendant in charge informed me that only regular train users could avail themselves of this service. I am quite a. frequent user of the railways but because I am not a daily traveller, or in other words because I do not reside in. one of the suburbs linked to the city by rail, I am unable to leave my child. _ This seems somewhat inconsistent, inasmuch as the dining-rooms, cafeteria, and other facilities are by no means limited to the use of train travellers. The position would be- different, of course, if the nursery constituted a free privilege or if it could not provide accommodation for children other than those arriving or departing by train. On the morning I called there was but one child in the -nursery. I hope that the authorities will see fit to extend this service .for general use by the public, in the same manner as other facilities at the Wellington new station. —I am, etc., SUBURBAN MOTHER. In reply to the above letter, Mr. G. H.-Mackley, General Manager of Railways, states that the creche at Wellington station is for the convenience of mothers or guardians travelling with children by-train, and 'as the patronage the nursery is receiving from this source is proving .very satisfactory and fully up to the capacity of the nursery on certain days, it would not be feasible to make it a general creche for the convenience of those not using the trains.
