SMOKING IN TRAINS

(To the Editor.)

Sir—l would like to add my support to the protest made by "Frequent Traveller" concerning the prevalence of smoking in non-smoking carriages. I am a frequent traveller on the 6.55 a.m. train from Wellington to W.oburn and the air in the carriages . labelled "non-smoking" is thick with smoke. On this particular train the majority of the passengers are railway employees who should set an example to the general public in the observance of Departmental regulations. ■...".,. Breaches of the regulations are also of daily occurrence on other trains. It appears to me to be a waste of time affixing labels to the windows of Carriages unless the regulations arc intended to be enforced. —I am, etc., REGULAR TRAVELLER.

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—May I be granted a little space to reply to "Frequent Traveller"? I heartily agree with "Frequent Traveller" that some of the non-smoking cars have more smokers in.them than those in which smoking is allowed; but every day, on the. workers' and suburban trains I have found that the "smoking cars" are. more- than twothirds filled by. non-smoking women. While reading the correspondent's letter on Friday evening I took notice if the passengers in the same car as myself "(a smoker). There were .32 persons seated; 24 were women and young girls, who did not smoke during the trip, four were men who were not smoking, two were boys of school age who smoked incessantly, and .'two, were adult smokers. On walking through the next car before alighting I saw there were 15 vacant seats, the other seats being taken in the main by men; some were filling pipes and'some making . cigarettes ready to light up on alighting at the .next station. This was a non-smoking" car.—l am, etc., . :..•'■■ R. W. McLAY.
