TRADE UNIONS

POLITICAL ASPECT

RECENT CONSOLIDATION

The important part that the trade unions would play in the next election was emphasised by Mr. F. P. Walsh, president of the Federation of Labour, when speaking at the Labour Party's welcome to the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) yesterday afternoon. Mr. Walsh said that before Mr. Savage left for England, he expressed the wish that the industrial movement in the Dominion would be welded into one big movement. In April last that had been brought about, and they owed their thanks to the Acting Prime Minister (the Hon. P. Eraser) and the Acting Minister of Labour (the Hon. P. C. Webb) for their wonderful assistance in the matter. "In New Zealand." said Mr. Walsh "there are more than 200,000 workers organised into trade unions. The Federation of Labour has 130,000 affiliated with it, and we are confident that before many more months are out that the figure will be close to 200,000. "There is little^ need for me to -say how such an organisation as the Federation of Labour can help the Government implement its policy," he added. "The federation will be one of the big factors in helping to return Labour to power at the next election."
