WELLINGTON MAORI CLUB
The monthly social evening of the Wellington Maori Club was held this week. There was a large attendance of members and visitors. A number of Ngati-Poneke Society were guests of the evening. Proceedings were opened by the National Anthem, sung in Maori. Songs and action songs were given by members of the"- Ngati-Poneke Society. The glee party of the Maori Club also sang two Native songs. ■ Mr. Kingi Tahiwi gave student? practice in the use of the Native tongue, and later taught (he audience a short appealing air with movements of hands accompanying it. Mr. H. M. Christie held an interested audience for nearly an hour while he told of the ancient days of Miramar. The long succession of tribes which occupied the island (and later the peninsula), and the numerous pas which stood on the steep points around the coast were mentioned. The speaker told of an invasion of Motukairangi (Miramar) by a combination of NgatiRauru, Ngati-Ruanui, and Mua-Upoko, which took place nearly seven hundred years ago. "Home, Sweet Home." sung by t,he audience in Maori, brought a pleasantl evening to a close. j
