COLLEGE RUGBY

FAST, OPEN GAME

WIN FOR SILVERSTREAM

In a fast, open, and frequently spectacular match, at Wellington College yesterday afternoon, St. Patrick's College (Silverstream) defeated Wellington College by 14 points to 9. The ground was a trifle heavy, but otherwise conditions were ideal. A large number of old boys from both colleges attended, and the bank was black with Silverstream and Wellington College boys, who enlivened the proceedings with frequent warcries and hakas. The match was fought at a cracking pace, but despite the keenness of the contest the very best sporting feeling prevailed, and there were remarkably few free-kicks necessary for infringements. Both packs of forwards assisted in opening: up the game. The Wellington College pack showed considerable improvement since the game with St. Patrick's (City), and took their side several times close to victory. The packs were very evenly balanced, if anything with a slight advantage in loose play in favour of Wellington. The decisive factor in the game, however, was the cohesivness and excellent handling of the Silverstream backs, whose movements never lacked penetration. The Silverstream second five-eighth and captain, Chancy, was the most outstanding player on the field, his ability to cut out men resulting in several tries being scored. The Wellington College back movements were indecisive. The Wellington backs collared well and seldom fumbled, but were frequently caught in possession with little distance gained.. Outstanding among ths Wellington backs were Rix-Trott, Flaws, and Bedingfield. The fullback, Greig, collared and kicked well. Chancy and Fox were the outstanding Silverstream backs. Rewai and Edmonds (Silverstream), and Nelligan and Shortt (Wellington) were prominent among the forwards.
