TRAMPERS GYRATE

COMBINED CLUBS' BALL ,

A large number of tramping enthusiasts and their friends assembled in St. Francis' Hall last night for the fifth annual ball of the Combined Tramping Clubs. In the dance hall interlaced streamers in red, green, yellow, and orange colourings canopied the ceiling, and black, tinsel-edged shields, pierced with ice axes and emblazoned, with the names of the various clubs represented, were arranged at intervals round the walls. An awning of multi-col-oured streamers distinguished the official corner from the rest of the room, and was cosily furnished with seagrass chairs.

During the evening a multitude of streamers, squeakers, balloons, and other novelties were showered from the balcony, and for a while pandemonium reigned with the noise of squeaking and hooting. Several exhibition dances by Mr. J. Cottier and partner were much enjoyed. An excellent dance band responded willingly to many encore numbers, and played many rhythmic "swing" numbers. A sit-down supper was served downstairs, where the tables were decorated with golden wattle, yellow jonquils, and birch.

The committee, representative of each Wellington tramping club, comprised Miss L. A. Milne (Hutt Valley), who wore a black taffeta frock; Miss C. McGreevy (Tararua), wearing silver lame; Mrs. F. U. France (Tararua), in white satin; Miss L. Huggins (Paua), wearing pink lace and satin; Miss M. C. Dunn (Victoria University College), in white appliqued net over gold satin; Mrs. V. F. Fenton (RueSac), who wore pale pink spotted satin; Messrs. F. France (Tararua), chairman; C. C. Burnette (Paua), honorary secretary; W. H. Sakey (Hutt Valley), F. U. France (Tararua), A.
