VALPEEN PLEASES

SCHOOLS AT RICCARTON

(Special to the "Evening Post.") CHRISTCHURCH, July 29. There was further schooling at Riccarton this morning, over the ■ inside fences, and after some days of fine weather and drying winds the ground was the best it has been recently. Manawatu (A. McDonald), Tangled ('McDowell), Forest Glow (R. Beale), and Valpeen (J. Muir) were associated in an interesting school over ten of the steeplechase fences. . Valpeen was content to remain in behind, while the other three raced practically in line. AH jumped faultlessly. Valpeen was under restraint, and appeared alwaysanxious to go up to the leaders- This horse is one of the ruling favourites for the National in Christchurch.

Red Sun (R. Smith) and Journet (N. Trillo) were • companions over eight hurdles. Journet jumped brilliantly, and had Red Sun struggling at most of the fences to keep up with him, but there was not much between them .it the finish. Red. Sun was inclined to rap some of the hurdles, but did not lose any ground.

Ethiop (McDowell) was also responsible for an attractive showing over four hurdles, jumping cleanly and fast. Collision (R. Smith) did a similar task without a semblance' of a mistake. He looks the part of. a good hurdler, and should be a formidable candidate for honours^ at both meetings. ,• .
