A decision to set up a boot and shoe research association was reached at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Footwear Manufacturers' Association, which was concluded yesterday. Messrs. H. Duckworth, W. Denby, E. Bi-idgens, and R. O'Shea were appointed to act as the executive committee of the new body. It was agreed that as far as possible the footwear manufacturers should co-operate with the tanners in research matters. Dr. E. Marsden, secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, addressed the meeting on the advantages of research, and said that the aim was, frankly, to enable local manufacturers to compete with the imported article, not in a spirit of antagonism but purely in the interests of enterprise. It was decided to co-operate with the Standards Institute, and Messrs. W. Denby, R. A. Marsh, and P. Edwards were appointed a committee for standards for footwear. On the subject of imports, the meeting resolved to obtain full information from local manufacturers concerning the effect of overseas competition. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr. H. Duckworth; vice-president, Mr. H. O. Pettendrigh; executive, Messrs. W. J. Moore, S. Livingstone, F. L. Livingstone, and J. R. Luff. j
