DRUNK IN CHARGE

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, This Day.

"The matter is one of such wide notoriety at the present time that men who take drink and drive cars know the great risk they are taking," said Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., in the Police Court this morning when dealing with William Selwyn Hewson, who pleaded guilty to a charge of intoxication while in charge of a motor-van. The evidence showed that the defendant knocked down a man, who was also under the influence of drink. Hewson was fined £5 and his licence was cancelled for twelve months.

Mr. Levien added that about 75 per cent, of the cases of this kind coming before himself and other Magistrates involved drivers of commercial vehicles, and that it would be establishing a precedent if he did not cancel the defendant's licence.
