MONTH'S WORK
Apprehensive report covering the work of the Junior Red Cross, was Sven at the recent monthly meeting § the Wellington Red Cross Society, at which Mr. F. S. Pope presided. W report showed that most of the junior circles were pursuing a programme of work including the making of toys, knitting, manufacture olchJdren's garments and quilts, and the collection of books for distribution to children in orphanages .and hospitals. A number of the girls were making Karitane clothing. Juniors had also paid visits, to the Home of Compassion, taking with them "useful gifts for the inmates. This work was-being carried out at Wellington Girls' College, Wellington East: Girls' College, Seatoun, Lyall Bay, Island Bay, Newtown, South Wellington, "< Makara, ■ Taita, ■rrentham, Ngaio, .Tawa Flat, Porirua, Pahautanui, Waikanae, Paekakariki, Mangaroa, Petone: West, Petone Centrl, Petone Convent, Hutt Valley Technical College, Hutt Valley High School, St. Peter and Paul Convent, Sacred Heart College, Northland, Thorndon, Epuni, and Stokes^ Valley Schools.
Because of the rapid expansion in the activities of the society,'ttie question of finance to meet the increases has arisen. It was decided to hold a special meeting of the executive at an ea^ly date, to formulate a! plan to strengthen the ' society's resources. ' The Red Cross nurse reported that classes in first aid ' and hygiene, and sanitation, had begun: These were well attended and much interest was being shown. The second.course for the year in home nursing would start early next month. Members of the voluntary aid detachment had held -their: monthly meeting, and were busy working for their stall at the Red Cross fair. A lecture on gas warfare had been arranged for later in the month, Mr. Kidman being the lecturer. Members had also visited Ewart Hospital in June.
The attention of members was drawn ■to the projected visit of the under-secretary-general' of the League of Red Cross Societies, Mr. de Gielgud. A special sub-committee was set up to formulate a plan of reception for the visitor.
The honorary joint secretaries of the society's cafeteria submitted a report showing that during the month 1819 people had patronised the cafeteria. Donations to the cafeteria amounted to £6 10s 3d.
The, honorary secretary of the women's auxiliary furnished a report showing that boots, clothing, blankets, and layettes had -been distributed among special cases of distress. Dressing gowns had been made for patients in hospital. Donations to layettes amounted to £1 9s, to be expended on the purchase of new material.
It was decided that the Collins Cup competition would be held in Palmerston North in August. A team comprising the following were in training for this event:—Misses A. Nicholl (captain), E. Armstrong, P. Orr, O. Bell, M^sdames N. Laursen, E. M. Wray, Mrs. J. Preston (emergency).
