MR. G. N. STURTEVANT

A wide circle of friends will regret to learn of the death of Mr. G. N. Sturtevant, of 19 Grove Road, Kelburn, which took place this" morning at the age of 79 years. Mr. Sturtevant, who retired some years ago as head of the lithographic department of the Government Printing Office, was the' eldest son of the late Mr. George Sturtevant, of Auckland; and was born in Nottingham, England. As a- child of five years of age, he came, out to. New Zealand with his parents in 1863 in the ship Ida Zeigler, and, his parents settling in Auckland, he was educated at the Auckland Grammar School.' He was apprenticed to.the lithographic trade, and joined the survey department as draughtsman. In 1889 he was transferred to Wellington, and from the Government Survey Office he was appointed to the Government Printing Office,- where he became head :of the lithographic department, being responsible . for carrying out special artistic work.

He was well known for his ■ very | artistic nature, '■■ and his work -was of a very high order, especially in, connection' with heraldic' designs. He executed many fine illuminated addresses and works of a similar description, the most notable of his achievements being trie production of a very comprehensive and accurate map o.C Wellington harbour and a remarkable model of Port Nicholson. These two works are of an exceptional order, and are on view in the Wellington Harbour Board office, where they have evoked much admiration. They took, many months to execute, and are specially notable for their exactitude, even down to the minutest detail. He also designed a special cover for the book of the National War Memorial Carillon. Mr. Sturtevant for many years was a member of the vestry of St. Michael and All Angels' Church, Kelburn, and a foundation member of the general committee of the War Memorial Carillon Society. Mr. Sturtevant married Miss Stewart, a daughter of the late. Mr. Samuel Stewart, of Auckland. His wife predeceased him in 1915. He is survived by a son and daughter, Mr. Harold Sturtevant, architect,, of Sydney, and Miss Ella Sturtevant. who resided with her father. Mr. A. V. Sturtevant, of Auckland, is a brother.

The. funeral service will be held in St. Michael and All Angels' Church at 11 o'clock on Monday morning.
