MUTABLE AND LAST END
• The victory of Mutable In the Australian Cup, 2J miles, at Flemington in March last furnished a pointed illustration that it is wise to avoid prejudices. His sire, Drake, was not a stayer, and with Sir Eager and Eager, who rank as his sire and grandsire respectively, known as milers, doubts were held in. regard to his progeny shining over a long distance. However, Mutable stayed out the two miles and a quarter in the Flemington race in attractive style and in good time. . Now comes another important winner for Drake, but in a different category. Last End. who led the field home in the V.R.C. Grand Natiohal Steeplechase, three miles, last Saturday, is a five-year-old son of Drake. Montargis, who finished in third place, fes also by Drake. It is not, however. [altogether unusual for a sire whoso offspring are best known as sprinters pn the flat to produce horses who excel |nter on over 'enees. ■>•
