TROTTING BREVITIES

The Ashburton Trotting Club has stolen all the thunder of the metropolitan clubs for classic racing, and can be depended upon' to maintain its strong position. Ropkella, who showed great promise in some of his winning efforts, went wrong some time ago, and was sold for 17 guineas out of C. Moran's stable. He is' now trained by A. ,Bryce.. Lawn Derby's rate of a*bout 2min 16sec for one mile and a half at Harold Park was a marvellous effort considering the going. The claim that Lawn Derby is Walla Walla's successor is no idle boast, says a Melbourne writer, and he should make history when he goes to New Zealand.

In America the breeding of trotters and pacers is carried on by a few very, keen sportsmen; and Mr. W. M Wright, who many years, ago bred the champion Peter Manning, lmin 56Ssec, must have derived much satisfaction from last season's results when 27 trotters and 12 pacers of his breeding gained records' of 2min lOsec or faster, the best being Calumet Evelyn, who recorded lmin 59} sec pacing and 2min trotting. Mr. Wright, a millionaire, is more than 70 years old and has made trotting his hobby. The progressive policy being pursued by the Auckland Trotting Club is further brought under notice, by the appearance of the programme for the August Meeting to be held at Alexandra Park on Saturday, August 28. Stakes have been increased by £375, representing a total of £1775. A feature of the well-varied programme is the fact that there will be no race with a value of less than £200 and bigger increases are attached to the minor and middle class events than to the faster races.

Glenastle is a three-year-old gelding by Guy Parrish from Logan's Pet, by Logan Pointer from Stanley's Child, by Stanley. Stanley's Child, who was bred by Mr. J. Sutherland at Kurow, has been a big success at the stud, among her progeny being such wellknown horses at Waitaki Girl (4min 22sec), Kid Logan <2min 8 2-ssec), Stanley Bingen (3min 22sec), and Bingen Chief (3min 23 3-ssec). Horses siredby Guy Parrish have been somewhat disappointing, but Glenastle is solidly bred on his maternal side. He is owned by Mr. W. Freeland anil trained by G. Barr at Papakaio.
